FARGO — A bowling pin. North Dakota State players and staff got a bowling pin in their locker room following a raucous win over Nevada Saturday night at Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome. The significance, of course, is more than trying to roll a strike. The 31-17 win put the Bison at 6-1 overall, enough victories to become bowl eligible. Going bowling, get it? That s all fine and dandy. But the words of significance were how it unfolded against the Wolfpack, a game that was more rare than picking up a 7-10 split by a 100-average bowler. This game got intoxicating in a matter of 3 minutes, 35 seconds on two plays that are rarely seen in college football. And they happened just minutes apart, which only added to the bizarre nature. A 100-yard kickoff return of a missed field goal by Jackson Williams? Never seen it. A two-point fumble return of a botched Nevada two-point conversion by NDSU s Matthew Stenbroten? Maybe seen it, but can t remember when or where.
